Carpenter left his start Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks after suffering the injury during his first at-bat. Carpenter had thrown 10 scoreless to start the season. He had thrown just 21.1 innings over the past two seasons due to shoulder and elbow injuries.

The Cardinals called up P.J. Walters to take Carpenter's spot in the rotation on Friday. Walters gave up three runs in four innings against the Cubs. The Cardinals lost the game 8-7 after the bullpen blew a one-run lead in the eighth.
