Persistence earns Phoenix 2011 All-Star nod
PHOENIX (AP) - Commissioner Bud Selig said the Arizona Diamondbacks earned the right to host the 2011 All-Star game with persistence and an impressive bid.

Selig announced the selection Saturday at a news conference at Chase Field, the home of the Diamondbacks.

"They got what they deserved today," he said. "They deserved to get this game.'

Phoenix is the first first-time host of the All-Star game since Denver in 1998.

Cities who lost out on the bidding are "going to have to work as hard as (the Diamondbacks) did and put together the same kind of very skillful presentation," Selig said.

Selig noted the tenacity the Diamondbacks showed in pursuing the contest.

"Don't take it the wrong way," he said, "you guys were pests after awhile."

The Diamondbacks began playing in 1998. The lack of downtown hotel space had been seen as an obstacle to Phoenix staging the game. But construction of a major hotel and expansion of the city's convention center helped the proposal.

The convention center will host the Fanfest in the days leading up to the July 12 contest. The triple-digit heat of July will bring everything indoors.

"We're going to make this All-Star game one to remember," Diamondbacks managing partner Ken Kendrick said. "Our community knows how to do large events. We've had a lot of stellar events here before. Having a baseball All-Star game is really the culmination for our franchise. We've hosted a World Series. Now we have the All-Star game. It just doesn't get any better than this."

The NBA All-Star game was held in Phoenix this year and the Super Bowl in nearby Glendale in 2008.

The area has been hit hard by the economic downturn, but Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon said he expects things to have turned around by the time the game is played.

"We'll be celebrating not only the All-Star game," he said, "but really the drive forward as far as this whole national economy."

This year's game is in St. Louis and 2010 will be hosted by the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

Kansas City was thought to be the front-runner for 2012, but the Boston Red Sox are pressing to host that year for the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park. The New York Mets and Citi Field are the likely host in 2013.
