--LHP Randy Johnson was again victimized by his defense in his second start of the season, a 9-4 loss to San Diego in which he gave up six runs, four earned. In two starts covering 10 2/3 innings, Johnson has given up nine runs, but only four earned. He has 13 strikeouts and seven walks. He threw 104 pitches, a total he exceeded only once in his 10 2007 starts.
--OF Eric Byrnes' 14-game hitting streak ended Sunday, when he went 0-for-4 and was deprived of a final at-bat when he was in the on-deck circle as Augie Ojeda was called out at first base on a groundball to end a 9-4 loss. Replays showed Ojeda was safe. "It was a good run. It would have been nice to get that last at-bat. Questionable call at first base," said Byrnes, who grew a mustache during the streak that he shaved immediately after the game. "You guys have not seen the last of the 'stache. I'm going with the 'stache all year. I'm declaring 2008 the year of the mustache," Byrnes said. --OF Chris Young was a late scratch Sunday with the upper respiratory infection that has worked its way through the clubhouse. It was the second game he has not started and the first he has not played in. Byrnes, 2B Orlando Hudson and OF Justin Upton have started every game this season. OF Alex Romero got his first major league start when Young couldn't go.
--D-Backs starters RHP Brandon Webb, RHP Dan Haren and RHP Micah Owings are 10-0 with a 1.96 ERA. Owings and Webb are the scheduled starters in a two-game series against San Francisco that begins Monday. Each beat the Giants in San Francisco last week. "I'm envious. One is 4-0 (Webb) and two are 3-0 and I'm the weak link," said Randy Johnson, whose ERA is 3.38. "It's fun watching the young kids pitch, especially the one I've been around for awhile, in Brandon. Micah is coming into his own. Dan, I've pitched against him, so I know what he's capable of doing. "Top to bottom, it's pretty good."
--RHP Micah Owings, the 2007 NL Silver Slugger award winner, made his first pinch-hit appearance of the season Sunday, striking out in the seventh inning. He was 1-for-4 with two walks in six pinch-hit appearances last season, when he hit .333 with four homers, seven doubles and 15 RBIs.
--1B Conor Jackson is 12-for-24 with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 10 runs in six games since being given an off day April 13. He has scored in all six games and had two three-RBI games and one four-RBI game. He is hitting .377 with an off-the-charts 1.186 OPS.
