PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks purchased the contract of utilityman Ryan Roberts on Saturday, finalizing their 25-man roster two days before their season opener.
The 28-year-old Roberts hit .288 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in spring training after entering as a non-roster invitee. His versatility was a selling point."He can play the outfield, he can play the infield, he can catch," manager Bob Melvin said. "Usually the last guy on the roster, you like to have some flexibility and do some things."
Roberts, who has played 10 major league games with Texas and Toronto, was chosen over first baseman Josh Whitesell and middle infielder Josh Wilson, who were sent to Triple-A Reno.
Arizona, which opens Monday against Colorado at home, breaks camp with 13 position players with 12 pitchers.
With Chad Tracy, Tony Clark and starting left fielder Conor Jackson, the Diamondbacks have an abundance of players who can play first base. Eric Byrnes will start the season as the fourth outfielder, with catcher Miguel Montero and infielders Augie Ojeda and Clark the position-player reserves.
The Diamondbacks already announced that right-hander Max Scherzer will start the regular season on the disabled list after getting a late start in spring training because of right shoulder soreness. Scherzer is expected to make his first scheduled start April 14.
With Scherzer out, Arizona will open the season with eight relievers.
