The Padres (42-65) came within one win of the postseason in 2007, losing a wild one-game playoff to Colorado in 13 innings. A playoff run was expected again this season, but San Diego has scored the second-fewest runs in the majors (411), and Washington is the only NL team with a worse record.
The Padres also have the 10th-ranked ERA in the league (4.40), despite playing their home games at spacious Petco Park. They were without Peavy for a month because of a strained right elbow, and Young (4-4, 4.50 ERA) is finally set to return.
Young hasn't pitched since being hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of St. Louis' Albert Pujols on May 21, leaving the right-hander with a broken nose and fractured skull.
After several simulated games and two rehab starts with Class-A Lake Elsinore, Young has no apprehension about returning to the mound
"After the injury I wasn't sure how that would be, if it would take a while to get over that," he said. "I've faced a lot of live batters since then and I haven't had any issues. It hasn't been a thought. In fact, there have been comebackers that were hit hard that I've fielded, some have gotten past me. Never once did I worry about it. Hopefully there won't be any in my face."
In his only start against the Diamondbacks (53-52) this season on April 19, Young gave up two runs and three hits in six innings of a 10-3 loss, but was not a factor in the decision. He is 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA in seven career starts versus Arizona.
The Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 8-4 in Monday's opener, their fourth straight victory after losing 22 of their previous 28 games. This is San Diego's longest winning streak since a season-best five-game run June 4-8.
Rookie catcher Nick Hundley homered in his second straight contest and drove in three runs Monday. He is 7-for-16 (.438) with five RBIs in his last four games.
The Diamondbacks lost for the second time in seven games, but remained one-game ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the West.
Arizona's Chris Young went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, and is hitting .429 (9-for-21) with six doubles and five RBIs in his last five games. He is hitless with six strikeouts in 12 career at-bats against the San Diego pitcher with the same name, though.
The Diamondbacks counter with Doug Davis (3-5, 4.22), who seeks his first victory in a month.
Davis is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in four starts in July after going 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his previous four outings. The left-hander, who has not won since June 30, gave up four runs and five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of 10-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.
In his only start of the season against the Padres on July 5, Davis allowed three runs and seven hits - including two home runs - with seven strikeouts in eight innings of a 4-2 loss.
