WASHINGTON (AP) - Arizona Diamondbacks' pitcher Edgar Gonzalez, currently on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right elbow, has decided against surgery, manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday.
The right-hander had an MRI and doctors recommended that he not have surgery."It's going to be four, six weeks before he's going to be able to play catch again," Melvin said. "Anything could happen in that time period, but that's the option he's chosen to take."
The 25-year-old right-hander has been on the DL since June 27. He is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA.
Eric Byrnes, who's been on the DL with a strained left hamstring since July 1 will have an MRI on Thursday, Melvin said.
Melvin said that he thought Byrnes would avoid surgery, but wasn't optimistic about his return.
"He potentially could be looking at doing it non-surgically, too," Melvin said. "It still could be that he misses the end of the season."
The 32-year-old outfielder has been on the DL twice with strains of each hamstring. He's batting just .209 with 6 home runs and 23 RBIs.
Catcher Chris Snyder, who's been on the DL since July 1 with a fractured left testicle, is progressing. He will be reevaluated on July 14.
