Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-05-05
The D-backs are beginning to get some production from OF Justin Upton, whose hitting streak reached 10 games after their split of a four-game series in Milwaukee. Now, if the rest of the outfielders would follow suit -- Chris Young ended that series with one hit in his previous 21 at-bats, Eric Byrnes was hitting .164 and Conor Jackson was at .203. The bullpen took a hit when RHP Tom Gordon was forced to leave Sunday's game with a left leg injury after a collision in a play at the plate. It came only a week after he was activated from the disabled list for the first time this season after offseason elbow surgery.

PLAYER NEWS:

--OF Justin Upton extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games with a single Monday, his fourth consecutive game hitting in the No. 5 spot in the order. Upton, who was walked twice and struck out, is hitting .378 during the streak, in which he has four home runs and 11 RBIs. He also has drawn four walks in the streak, for a .465 on-base percentage.

--SS Josh Wilson made a lunging catch to his right to start the second triple play in D-backs history when he caught Casey Blake's line drive with runners on the move from first and second on a 3-2 pitch in the second inning. Wilson threw to 2B Felipe Lopez for the second out, and Lopez threw to 1B Conor Jackson for the third out, even though the Dodgers' runner from first was already at second. Wilson also had two hits and an RBI.

--RHP Tom Gordon was placed on the disabled list Monday after suffering a torn left hamstring muscle in a collision with Milwaukee 2B Rickie Weeks on a play at the plate in the D-backs' 4-3 loss Sunday. Weeks slid into Gordon while attempting to score from third base as Gordon covered home after a wild pitch. Gordon tagged Weeks out but immediately went to the ground in pain. Gordon, 41, was activated from the disabled list only last Monday after offseason surgery to remove bone chips in his right elbow and re-channel his ulnar nerve. In three appearances, Gordon has given up three hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings for a 21.60 ERA.

--RHP Leo Rosales was recalled from Class AAA Reno to take RHP Tom Gordon's place on the roster. Rosales was 2-1 with one save and an 0.90 ERA in eight appearances covering 10 innings with Reno. Rosales, who made his major league debut last season, pitched the eighth inning Monday and is the 17th pitcher the D-backs have used this season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Tom Gordon (torn left hamstring) left the May 3 game after a collision at home plate. He was placed on the disabled list May 4.

SS Stephen Drew (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25.

RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. He threw a bullpen session April 21 but missed a session April 24 and was shut down. Webb is likely out until June.
