PLAYER NEWS:
--OF Justin Upton has 10 hits in 27 at-bats during an eight-game hitting streak that began when he returned to the starting lineup April 24 after a one-game absence. He has started every game since. After beginning the season 1-for-18, Upton has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, with four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs, raising his batting average from .056 to .254.
--1B Tony Clark's first extra-base hit since opening day drove in the tie-breaking runs Friday, the D-backs' first victory at Miller Park since 2005. Clark, who hit home runs from both sides of the plate while starting in a 9-8 victory over Colorado April 6, had only two singles since then while battling a 1-for-20 slump.
--RHP Jon Garland, who has a victory in all 14 American League parks, was denied his first win in Miller Park despite limiting the Brewers to two runs in 6 1/3 innings, the second run scoring after he was removed with one out and a runner on second base. After walking 12 batters in his first 24 2/3 innings this season, Garland did not allow a walk and reached a three-ball count on only one batter.
--RHP Tony Pena (3-0, 1.50 ERA) has equaled his victory total from his 72 appearances last season while taking charge as the main setup man. Pena has given up two earned runs in 12 innings while striking out 10. Pena also has two holds.
--IF Augie Ojeda missed his second straight game with what manager Bob Melvin called a groin strain, enabling SS Josh Wilson to make his second start of the season. Wilson was purchased from Class AAA Reno last Sunday when starting SS Stephen Drew (hamstring) was placed on the disabled list. Wilson is 1-for-7 in his two starts.
--RHP Tom Gordon permitted four of the five runners he faced to reach base Thursday while taking a loss in his second outing since returning from the disabled list Monday. Gordon gave up two singles and two walks and threw only seven strikes among his 19 pitches in the seventh inning, and he was replaced after getting only one out. He had a 1-2-3 outing Tuesday, his first major league appearance since July 6 with Philadelphia.
--RHP Dan Haren (2-3, 1.54) has the third-best ERA in an April in D-backs history. Haren made quality starts in all five of his appearances and leads the major leagues in batting average against, .171. But the D-backs scored only eight runs while he was on the mound. "I've always prided myself on my consistency. Hopefully I can go out and be consistent the rest of the way," Haren said. LHP Randy Johnson had a 0.91 ERA in April 2000 and a 1.37 ERA in April 2002.
MEDICAL WATCH:
SS Augie Ojeda (groin) sat out the April 30 game. He is day-to-day.
SS Stephen Drew (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25.
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. He threw a bullpen session April 21 but missed a session April 24 and was shut down. Webb is likely out until June.
