Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-04-28

Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-04-28
SS Josh Wilson was purchased from Class AAA Reno on Sunday to replace SS Stephen Drew (hamstring) on the 25-man roster. Drew was placed on the disabled list Sunday, retroactive to Saturday.

RHP Esmerling Vasquez was recalled from Class AAA Reno on Sunday to replace LHP Doug Slaten in the bullpen.

RHP Tom Gordon (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Monday, at which point another roster move will be made.

PLAYER NEWS:

--2B Felipe Lopez, the D-backs' leading hitter with a .311 batting average, was given his first day off of the season Monday, when OF Chris Young moved into the leadoff role. Lopez, who has seven doubles and two home runs, was the last D-backs regular to get a day off.. "From the very start of spring training he's fit in here very well as a person. (He's a) very likable guy, a talented guy," manager Bob Melvin said in his media briefing before the game.

--RHP Tom Gordon (elbow) was activated from the disabled list Monday to boost a bullpen that has a 5.31 ERA, which ranks 14th in the National League. Gordon, 41, is expected to join RHP Tony Pena as a principal setup man for closer RHP Chad Qualls. Gordon, who made four appearances in rehab games/extended spring training games, last pitched in a major-league game on July 6, 2008, with Philadelphia before missing the rest of the season with an elbow injury that required October surgery to remove bone chips and reposition his ulnar nerve.

--RHP Bobby Korecky was optioned to Class AAA Reno to make room for Tom Gordon, keeping the bullpen at seven arms. Korecky was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in four appearances since being recalled from Reno on April 13. He was acquired off waivers from Minnesota early in spring training.

--RHP Esmerling Vasquez made his major-league debut with an inning of scoreless relief Sunday. Vasquez, 25, gave up two hits but picked a runner off first base to avoid any damage. He was a top prospect as a starter in 2007, going 10-6 with a 2.99 ERA at Class AA Mobile, but suffered a shoulder injury in the Arizona Fall League that fall and pitched mostly out of the bullpen in the second half of 2008 at Class AAA Tucson.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Conor Jackson (illness) missed the April 24 game. He appeared as a pinch hitter April 25.

SS Stephen Drew (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25.

RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. He threw a bullpen session April 21 but missed a session April 24 and was shut down. Webb is likely out until June.
