Dbackszone.com | Arizona Diamondbacks News, diamondbacks Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - RHP Brandon Webb was eligible to return from the disabled list Wednesday, but he wasn't ready to come back so quickly. He won't return until June.
PLAYER NEWS: --RHP Brandon Webb (shoulder) will be shut down for three weeks, manager Bob Melvin said, likely delaying Webb's return into June. Webb felt soreness while playing catch and did not make a scheduled bullpen session Friday afternoon. He will do nothing for a week before undergoing two weeks of arm strengthening. That means Webb will not begin a throwing program until mid-May at the earliest, and "once you're shut down for three weeks, it's like starting over," D-backs player personnel director A.J. Hinch said. Melvin said no medical tests for Webb are scheduled after an April 10 MRI showed fluid in the shoulder but no structural damage.
--LHP Randy Johnson, who held the D-backs to one hit in seven innings last Sunday, will make his first start in Chase Field as a visitor Saturday after snubbing the D-backs' $2.5 million free agent offer last winter to sign an $8 million deal with the Giants. "They've got a World Series ring, and that doesn't happen without Randy Johnson," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
--OF Eric Byrnes, a late addition to the lineup when Conor Jackson was scratched due to illness Friday, seems to be finding himself. He has four hits, including two doubles and a home run, in 11 at-bats in his last three starts, two in left field and one in right. His double in the third inning Friday hit off the top of the fence in left, and Melvin argued for a home run before replay was used to keep it a double.
--RHP Yusmeiro Petit will remain in the starting rotation in RHP Brandon Webb's absence and is expected to make his third start of the season Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs. Petit has given up five earned runs in 10 innings in his two starts.
MEDICAL WATCH:
OF Conor Jackson (illness) missed the April 24 game.
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. He threw a bullpen session April 21, but missed a session on April 24 and was shut down. Webb is likely out until June.
RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Reno on April 19, and he could return to the Diamondbacks by May 1.
