Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-04-17

Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-04-17
The Diamondbacks placed RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) on the disabled list April 12, and they added RHP Bobby Korecky to the bullpen the next day. RHP Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the disabled list April 14, when he is to make his first start of the season after being slightly delayed out of spring training with right shoulder inflammation.

PLAYER NEWS:

--2B Felipe Lopez has six two-hit games in his first nine games with the Diamondbacks and is tied for the NL lead in multihit games with Florida 3B Emilio Bonifacio and Washington SS Cristian Guzman. Lopez is a career .350 hitter at Chase Field, with six homers and 16 RBIs in 123 at-bats.

--RHP Brandon Webb, who has not thrown a baseball since being placed on the disabled list Sunday because of bursitis in his right shoulder, is scheduled to play catch this weekend in San Francisco on the D-backs' first trip of the season. Webb is eligible to return from the disabled list April 22, but manager Bob Melvin has not determined the date of Webb's next start. "Whether it is that day or a couple of days after, it all depends on when he throws his first bullpen (session) and if we think he needs another bullpen after that," Melvin said. Webb has 70 victories since the start of the 2005 season, the most in the major leagues.

--3B Mark Reynolds on Wednesday homered in consecutive games for the seventh time in his career and has reached base via a hit or walk in all eight games he has played this season. He is hitting .286 with a .904 OPS. He has eight strikeouts in 28 at-bats, a better ratio in a small sample size than when he set a major league record with 204 strikeouts in 539 at-bats last season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He made a rehab start for Class A Visalia on April 9, and he was activated April 14.

RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. The ailment was not considered serious, and he could be back in late April.

RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will throw in extended spring training on April 16, and he could return to the Diamondbacks by May 1.
