The Diamondbacks placed RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) on the disabled list April 12, and they added RHP Bobby Korecky to the bullpen the next day. RHP Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the disabled list April 14, when he is to make his first start of the season after being slightly delayed out of spring training with right shoulder inflammation.
PLAYER NEWS: --RHP Billy Buckner was optioned to Class AAA Reno when RHP Max Scherzer was activated from the disabled list for his first start of the season against St. Louis, his hometown team. Buckner had allowed seven runs in four innings over three appearances.
Scherzer was slightly delayed out of spring training after taking a shot of cortisone in his right shoulder after experiencing soreness in January. He went five innings against the Cardinals, allowing three runs.
--RHP Dan Haren, LHP Doug Davis and RHP Max Scherzer will start the weekend series at San Francisco on four days' rest because of the off day Thursday. RHP Yusmeiro Petit, who stepped in for RHP Brandon Webb on April 10, will be skipped this turn through the rotation. However, Petit is in line to make his second start of the season April 21, the day before Webb (right shoulder bursitis) is eligible to return from the disabled list.
--RHP Chad Qualls failed to convert his first save opportunity in the eighth inning or later since Aug. 27 when he blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning Tuesday against the Cardinals. Qualls won the closer's job by converting all seven save opportunities in the final 17 days of the 2008 regular season, and he had been 1-for-1 this season entering Tuesday's game.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He made a rehab start for Class A Visalia on April 9, and he was activated April 14.
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. The ailment was not considered serious.
RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He threw to hitters for the second time April 13, and he could return to action by May 1.
