Dbackszone.com | Arizona Diamondbacks News, diamondbacks Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Diamondbacks placed RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) on the disabled list April 12, and they added RHP Bobby Korecky to the bullpen the next day. RHP Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the disabled list April 14, when he is to make his first start of the season after being slightly delayed out of spring training with right shoulder inflammation.
PLAYER NEWS: --RHP Bobby Korecky was recalled from Class AAA Reno on Monday to replace RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis), who was placed on the disabled list Sunday. Korecky, 29, made his major league debut with Minnesota last season, going 2-0 with a 4.58 ERA in 16 relief appearances. He was claimed by the D-backs off waivers from the Twins the first week of spring training. "Hopefully I'll get a chance to pitch a little bit and show I can stay here," Korecky said. "It's the same circus, just a bigger tent."
--RHP Max Scherzer is to make his 2009 debut in a start against St. Louis on Tuesday, when he will be activated from the disabled list. The D-backs will make another pitching move -- they are carrying eight relievers -- when Scherzer is activated. Scherzer, who is from St. Louis, gave up two runs in five innings in his lone start against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium last year.
--SS Stephen Drew has two doubles and a home run this season, giving him 79 extra-base hits since the start of the 2008 season. It is the most among major league shortstops, five more than the Mets' Jose Reyes and Florida's Hanley Ramirez (both with 74). Drew became the third shortstop in major league history with 40 doubles, 10 triples and 20 homers in the same season when he 44, 11 and 21 respectively last year.
--RHP Tom Gordon threw to hitters for the second time this spring Monday and was pleased with the work, although he hit INF-OF Ryan Roberts in the left side with an inside fastball. "My curveball was there, and my fastball was where I wanted it to be as far as command, for the most part," Gordon said. The D-backs believe Gordon's next appearance could be in a minor-league game on a rehab assignment, perhaps as early Thursday or Friday.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7. The ailment was not considered serious.
RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He made a rehab start for Class A Visalia on April 9, and he is expected to make his first big-league start of the season April 14.
RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He threw to hitters for the second time April 13, and he could return to action by May 1.
