--RHP Brandon Webb was given an MRI Thursday after experiencing soreness in his right shoulder for about 10 days but expects to begin throwing Saturday and to make his next scheduled start April 17. A potential $54 million contract extension was tabled last summer when insurance companies would not sign off on perceived irregularities in Webb's right shoulder. Webb said a visit to specialist Dr. James Andrews over the winter revealed no abnormalities.
--RHP Tom Gordon threw to hitters for the first time this season Friday, tossing 31 pitches off a mound in pregame work at Chase Field. He threw another 20 in the bullpen. "This is the best I've felt since the All-Star Game in 2006," said Gordon, who underwent elbow surgery in October but could be ready to be activated from the disabled list by May 1, possibly earlier.
--OFs Justin Upton and Eric Byrnes have split the first four starts in right field. Upton is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. Byrnes, who also had made one start in left field, is 1-for-10 with two walks and a sacrifice fly after singling in the fourth inning Friday. "We're going to run a lineup that is best suited for a particular day," manager Bob Melvin said.
--RHP Max Scherzer's fastball touched 96 mph in a rehab start at Class A Visalia on Thursday night, Melvin said, and Scherzer is on track to make his regular-season debut in the D-backs' April 14 game against St. Louis. Scherzer, delayed by shoulder soreness, gave up two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four, walked four and hit a batter while throwing 95 pitches.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder stiffness) was scratched from his April 11 start. He was expected to resume throwing April 11 and make his scheduled April 17 start.
RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He made a rehab start for Class A Visalia on April 9, and he is expected to make his first big-league start of the season April 14.
RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He threw to hitters for the first time on April 10, and he could return to action by May 1.
