--RHP Max Scherzer allowed two runs (one earned) in 4 2/3 innings Thursday during a rehab start for Class A Visalia. He allowed one hit and four walks while striking out five. Scherzer, on the disabled list due to shoulder stiffness, is expected to start for Arizona on Tuesday.
--OF Justin Upton, who did not start opening day, started and batted eighth in the second and third games of the season. He is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and a walk but is not concerned, saying, "I feel comfortable at the plate." Upton hit .197 with no homers and 11 RBIs in 61 at-bats in spring training.
--RHP Tom Gordon, on the disabled list after elbow surgery last August, is scheduled to throw to hitters for the first time this spring Friday in a pregame session at Chase Field. Gordon, expected to provide relief to a bullpen that gave up nine runs (seven earned) in 11 innings to Colorado, appears to be ahead of schedule and could be activated by May 1.
--The D-backs have started three first basemen in three games -- Tony Clark, Chad Tracy and Conor Jackson. Jackson opened last season at first base but became the starting left fielder at the midway point when OF Eric Byrnes was lost for the season because of hamstring injuries. Jackson is the starting left fielder this year. He played three games at first in spring training but "had plenty of fundamental practice and plenty of early work. He's got a lot of reps in at first," manager Bob Melvin said. Jackson made a remarkable stretch to save an out on a wide throw in the fourth inning Wednesday.
