--RHP Chad Qualls was back in uniform Wednesday after missing Tuesday night's game to be with his wife, Tara, for the birth of their first child, Caiden Joseph, at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday. "It was definitely a great experience," said Qualls, who cut the umbilical cord and spent the night at the hospital.
--RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder) will be shut down for several days and will not make his scheduled start Saturday because of soreness, manager Bob Melvin said. Webb reported soreness when he arrived at the clubhouse Wednesday after first feeling it in Monday's opening-day start against Colorado, when he gave up six runs and six hits in a no-decision. "This isn't something you mess around with," Melvin said. "I'm trying to be proactive on this one."
--RHP Yusmeiro Petit will take RHP Brandon Webb's start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Petit was 3-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 19 appearances last season, including 3-4 with a 4.35 ERA in eight starts. He lost his only start against the Dodgers last season, giving up home runs to Manny Ramirez and Casey Blake while going five innings in a 4-2 loss.
--RHP Max Scherzer will start for Class A Visalia in its California League opener at Lake Elsinore on Thursday. He is slated to throw between 90 and 100 pitches in a final tune-up for his first scheduled start for the Diamondbacks on Tuesday against St. Louis. Scherzer was slightly delayed out of spring training after taking a shot of cortisone because of shoulder soreness before reporting to camp.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder stiffness) was scratched from his April 11 start. He was to visit the team doctor before a determination was made on when he might return.
RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will make a rehab start for Class A Visalia on April 9, and he is expected to make his first regular-season start April 14.
RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Gordon, who did not throw off a mound until a month into spring training, is not expected back in the major leagues until early May.
