He has hit safely in eight of nine games since he was activated from the disabled list Aug. 26. His hitting streak, which had reached 10 games counting three before his injury, was broken Wednesday. Of his 112 games this season, Upton has started 109 and has been used twice as a pinch runner and once in a double-switch. --OF Chris Young has one hit in 17 at-bats since returning from a 2 1/2-week stay at Class AAA Reno. Young has nine strikeouts, seven in his 10 plate appearances since singling in the second inning of a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers on Monday. He was 2-for-30 before being optioned out on Aug. 10. He is hitting .187 with 104 strikeouts in 332 at-bats this season. --RHP Bryan Augenstein made his first appearance for the D-backs since the second game of a May 20 doubleheader, his second start as a rotation fill-in for RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder). Augenstein was recalled Tuesday. He is likely to be used out of the bullpen for the rest of the season as he prepares for the Arizona Fall League, which begins Oct. 13.
--RHP Billy Buckner, who turned 26 a week ago, allowed eight hits and four runs in six innings Thursday in a 4-2 loss to the Dodgers. Buckner kept the D-backs in the game while striking out four and allowing only one walk. He picked a runner off first and kept the Dodgers out of the big inning, pitching out of trouble in the second and sixth innings to limit the Dodgers to one run each time. Buckner entered the game 2-5 with an 8.63 ERA.
MEDICAL WATCH:
LHP Scott Schoeneweis (depression) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 10.
OF Eric Byrnes (fractured left hand) went on the 15-day disabled list June 26, and he had surgery that day. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Reno on Aug. 16.
RHP Chad Qualls (dislocated left kneecap) went on the 60-day disabled list Aug. 31. He will have season-ending surgery once swelling in the knee subsides.
C Chris Snyder (lower back pain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 23. He might miss the rest of the season.
OF/1B Conor Jackson (valley fever) went on the 15-day disabled list May 12, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 23. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Visalia on Aug. 11, but he was shut down in mid-August after experiencing a setback.
RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder bursitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 9. He felt soreness in a June 18 throwing session, and was shut down until July 27. He felt soreness while throwing that day, and he had season-ending surgery Aug. 3.
