Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-09-04

Arizona Diamondbacks Roster Report 2009-09-04--OF Justin Upton, a late scratch because of a problem with his contact lenses, made his first pinch-hit appearance of the season pay off, doubling in the eighth inning Thursday. He has hit safely in eight of nine games since he was activated from the disabled list Aug. 26. His hitting streak, which had reached 10 games counting three before his injury, was broken Wednesday. Of his 112 games this season, Upton has started 109 and has been used twice as a pinch runner and once in a double-switch.

--OF Chris Young has one hit in 17 at-bats since returning from a 2 1/2-week stay at Class AAA Reno. Young has nine strikeouts, seven in his 10 plate appearances since singling in the second inning of a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers on Monday. He was 2-for-30 before being optioned out on Aug. 10. He is hitting .187 with 104 strikeouts in 332 at-bats this season.

--RHP Bryan Augenstein made his first appearance for the D-backs since the second game of a May 20 doubleheader, his second start as a rotation fill-in for RHP Brandon Webb (right shoulder). Augenstein was recalled Tuesday. He is likely to be used out of the bullpen for the rest of the season as he prepares for the Arizona Fall League, which begins Oct. 13.

--RHP Billy Buckner, who turned 26 a week ago, allowed eight hits and four runs in six innings Thursday in a 4-2 loss to the Dodgers. Buckner kept the D-backs in the game while striking out four and allowing only one walk. He picked a runner off first and kept the Dodgers out of the big inning, pitching out of trouble in the second and sixth innings to limit the Dodgers to one run each time. Buckner entered the game 2-5 with an 8.63 ERA.
