Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-09-01
--2B/SS David Eckstein was acquired from Toronto on Sunday, hours before the deadline for postseason eligibility. Eckstein, 33, is expected to play second base and hit at the top of the order. He was hitting .277 in his first season with the Blue Jays, who signed him to a one-year free agent deal last winter. "You can't have too many good players," D-backs manager Bob Melvin said.

--By losing his last two starts, RHP Brandon Webb was unable to become the sixth pitcher since 1990 to record his 20th victory by the end of August. RHP Roger Clemens did it twice, once with Boston and once with Toronto. RHP Bob Welch, RHP Jack McDowell, RHP John Smoltz and RHP Curt Schilling were the others. Webb has given up 12 earned runs in his last eight innings over two starts.

--RHP Jon Rauch (forearm tightness) missed the three-game weekend series against Los Angeles, feeling pain in his last appearance in San Diego after giving up runs in four of his last five outings. An MRI showed no structural damage, just fluid on the muscle, and Rauch is expected to return soon.

--OF Chris Young has a four-game hitting streak, including three multiple-hit games, to improve his batting average to .245, its highest since late May. Young has a career-high 39 doubles and is on the verge of becoming the third player in franchise history with 40 doubles, after OF Luis Gonzalez (four times, a high of 52 in 2006) and 1B Chad Tracy (41 in 2006.)

--C Robby Hammock is expected to join the D-backs from Class AAA Tucson when major league rosters expand to include players on the 40-man roster Monday. Hammock will serve as a third catcher. Hammock opened the season with the D-backs while C Miguel Montero recovered from a thumb injury and hit .171 in 41 at-bats in two stints with the D-backs.

--OF Jeff Salazar had hits in three of his last five pinch-hit appearances, and he credits a new pre-game approach that includes standing in against RHP Brandon Webb and RHP Dan Haren during their normal off-day bullpen sessions. "For a guy in my (bench) role, it is real easy to lose the sharpness of a breaking ball or the velocity of a fastball" when you do not see them every day, he said. "Anything you can do to give yourself more looks, it's great. Those are two of the best in the game."

--LHP Wil Ledezma, acquired off waivers from San Diego on Friday, pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in his D-Backs' debut Sunday. He gave up two hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not allow an inherited runner to score.

BY THE NUMBERS: 148 -- Consecutive days the D-backs have led or been tied for the NL West lead.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "'Webby' has gone a great job. He's done some amazing things. He's still human, no matter how super-human you're going to make him. You battle with him, because you know he's battling with you." -- OF Chris Young, after RHP Brandon Webb gave up eight runs, tying a career high, in an 8-2 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday, failing in his second attempt to win his 20th game this season.
