--RHP Brandon Webb had his eight-game winning streak stopped Tuesday in San Diego, as well as his streak of nine consecutive quality starts. It was his first start after being struck directly in the lower left ribcage by a line drive by San Diego 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff in the sixth inning of the D-backs' 4-1 victory Aug. 21. Webb remained in the game for one more inning that night.
--OF Adam Dunn reached base all four times Tuesday, on a single and three walks, and has reached base in 12 of his 14 games with the D-backs. He is hitting .255, but with his 19 walks has a .484 on-base percentage. He has hit cleanup and played right field in every game with the D-backs. --OF Justin Upton (left oblique strain) is hitting .275 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 13 rehab games at Class AAA Tucson. He has 22 strikeouts in 51 at-bats, and while his injury appears healed, the D-backs are unlikely to recall him before rosters expand on Sept. 1. "The injury isn't the problem anymore. He's still feeling his way and he needs to get some consistent at-bats and some confidence coming back," manager Bob Melvin said.
--As previously planned, RHP Yusmeiro Petit will be skipped on his next turn through the rotation because of Thursday's off day so the D-backs can start LHP Doug Davis, RHP Dan Haren and RHP Brandon Webb against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game series that begins Friday at Chase Field. Petit, 3-3 with a 2.83 ERA, has won his last two starts while giving up three runs and six hits in 13 innings, striking out 11.
--The D-backs lead the majors with 81 quality starts, and RHP Brandon Webb and RHP Dan Haren are tied for the major league lead with 21, along with San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum and Mets LHP Johan Santana. LHP Randy Johnson has 14 quality starts, including his last seven.
--RHP Brandon Lyon had allowed 10 earned runs in his last 5 1/3 innings while converting his only save opportunity in that run, but manager Bob Melvin said he is sticking with Lyon as his closer. Lyon has converted 25 of his 30 save opportunities. "He's an integral part for us. I think he earned the chance to go out there in a save situation," Melvin said. Lyon has a 4.18 ERA in save situations and a 6.00 ERA in non-save situations. He has a 12.75 ERA in 13 appearances since the All-Star break.
BY THE NUMBERS: 20 -- Brandon Webb is on track to become the first National League pitcher to win 20 games since Chris Carpenter (Cardinals), Roy Oswalt (Astros) and Dontrelle Willis (Marlins) did so in 2005.
