Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-08-26
--RHP Jon Rauch allowed a two-run homer to Jody Gerut in the bottom of the ninth, sending the Diamondbacks to defeat against the Padres. The Diamondbacks missed out on a chance to extend their N.L. West lead to four games over the Dodgers, who also lost.

--RHP Brandon Webb can become the N.L.'s first 20-game winner since 2005 with a victory in San Diego on Tuesday. Webb (19-4) was among six pitchers tied for the N.L. lead in victories with 16 in 2006, when he won the Cy Young Award. San Diego RHP Jake Peavy led the N.L. with 19 victories in 2007, also winning the Cy Young. Florida LHP Dontrelle Willis (22), St. Louis RHP Chris Carpenter (21) and Houston RHP Roy Oswalt (20) were 20-game winners in 2005, when Carpenter won the Cy Young.

--The Diamondbacks were 4-2 on their recent home stand and have won seven of their last 10 series since the All-Star break, splitting another. They already have won season series against N.L. West foes Colorado (10-2 with six games remaining) and San Diego (10-5 with three games remaining).

--LHP Doug Davis (back pain) was uncertain entering Sunday's start, so the Diamondbacks recalled RHP Billy Buckner from Class AAA Tucson and optioned LHP Doug Slaten to Tucson before the game. The precaution proved unnecessary when Davis threw a quality start, giving up three runs in seven innings.

--LHP Randy Johnson won the N.L. Cy Young Award four consecutive times from 1999-2002. Johnson, who is to start Wednesday, set the franchise record for victories when he was 24-5 in 2002. RHP Brandon Webb is looking for his win No. 20 on Tuesday and has a shot at his second Cy Young.

BY THE NUMBERS: 20 -- Brandon Webb is on track to become the first National League pitcher to win 20 games since Chris Carpenter (Cardinals), Roy Oswalt (Astros) and Dontrelle Willis (Marlins) did so in 2005.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Good riddance to them." -- Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, after the Marlins beat Arizona for the seventh time in nine games this season. The two teams do not face each other the rest of the way.
