Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-08-02
--LHP Randy Johnson stretched his streak of not allowing an earned run to 21 innings in a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles on Friday, the Dodgers' only run scoring after an infield error. Johnson (9-7) won his fifth straight start and has 293 victories in his career with likely 10 starts remaining this season. Johnson struck out six and allowed five hits, all singles. "My mechanics have fallen into place the last three, four games," Johnson said.

--1B Tony Clark's game-tying home run in the seventh inning Friday was his third of the season, and his first hitting left-handed. A switch-hitter, Clark's previous two have come from the right side. Told he was a hero, Clark said, "I'm not a hero. I'm a small piece of the puzzle." The D-Backs are 10-4 since Clark was acquired from San Diego at the All-Star break.

--RHP Juan Cruz was activated from the disabled list Friday after recovering from a strained left oblique muscle suffered when he threw a 2-0 pitch to San Diego 1B Adrian Gonzalez in the ninth inning of a July 5 game. Cruz threw 32 pitches in his final game Tuesday at Class AAA Tucson, where he registered 96-97 mph on the radar gun. He will likely fill more of a middle-inning role after the acquisition of RHP Jon Rauch on July 22. "We've always had a good bullpen," said Cruz, 2-0 with a 3.23 ERA. "With (Rauch), we're better."

--RHP Jailen Peguero, recalled from Class AAA Tucson when RHP Micah Owings was optioned out Tuesday, was returned to Tucson on Friday. He did not pitch in a game with the D-backs this time around, but made two appearances in an earlier stay this season.

--RHP Yusmeiro Petit, who is 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA, will make his third start Saturday since rejoining the D-Backs on July 1. He is 1-0 with a 1.64 in his two previous starts, beating the Cubs on July 22 and getting a no-decision against Milwaukee on July 2. He gave up only one run and five hits in 11 innings of those two starts. "He's keeping the ball down in the zone better than we've seen at times," manager Bob Melvin said.

--OF Justin Upton (left oblique) did some throwing and running and work in the batting cage Friday, manager Bob Melvin, but likely will not start live batting practice until the D-backs return home for a three-game series against Pittsburgh beginning Monday. "No setbacks," Melvin said. "We are just being cautious. It's probably a couple more days than we originally forecast."

BY THE NUMBERS: .818 -- OF Conor Jackson's career batting average against San Francisco LHP Jonathan Sanchez, after Jackson doubled and homered off Sanchez on Friday. Jackson is 9-for-11 with a double and two homers off Sanchez.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The time of day we started was ridiculous. You couldn't see anything. It was almost scary. The sun was glaring off the backdrop (in center field) ... the ball is white, the backdrop is white. You don't pick the ball up. You can't tell what the spin is." -- 1B Chad Tracy, after a 6:05 pm start in San Francisco in a matchup of RHPs Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum.
