Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-05-02
--RHP Chad Qualls had a 0.00 ERA in 15 April appearances, the best month of his career, although he was 0-1 because of two unearned runs in an April 14 loss in San Francisco. Qualls, who also had a save, gave up six hits in 15 2/3 innings while striking out 14. He induced five double-play grounders with his hard sinker. "I usually finish strong. It's nice to get off to a good start," Qualls said.

--1B Conor Jackson had a career April, hitting .348 with five home runs and 25 RBIs, his most homers and RBIs he's had in any month since coming to the majors in August 2005. He was tied for the major league lead with three triples. "I felt this was kind of a put-up-or-shut-up year for me. I always felt I had this in me. It's nice to know my name is going to be in the lineup every day," Jackson said.

--LHP Randy Johnson (1-1, 4.79 ERA) gave up six earned runs in four innings of a no-decision Wednesday, tying the most earned runs he has given up in 14 starts since returning to the team in 2007. He gave up six in his first start of 2007, against San Diego on April 24. "He just missed in the middle of the plate," manager Bob Melvin said. Johnson retired eight of the last nine batters he faced and did not walk a batter for the first time in four starts this season. Rush bassist Geddy Lee was in attendance as a guest of Johnson at Chase Field.

--RHP Brandon Lyon has converted his last eight save opportunities and has made 11 consecutive scoreless appearances since April 9. Lyon has nine saves while returning to the closer's role this season for the first time since 2005, when he had 10 saves in April, tying RHP Matt Mantei's franchise record for the month.

--The Diamondbacks have won eight series and split a ninth since losing their first series of the season at Cincinnati. "It's nice for a young club to get off to a good start, but the season doesn't end in April. You have to follow it up," manager Bob Melvin said. Arizona won nine straight series in the second half of 2007 while winning the NL West.

--RHP Micah Owings has eight doubles, a triple, five home runs and 18 RBIs in 79 career at-bats after his two-run, two-out, opposite-field pinch homer Wednesday. "I've been blessed to be able to swing it," said Owings, the 2007 NL Silver Slugger award winner. Owings has a career .354 batting average, and his career OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) is 1.044. Anything over 1.000 is considered outstanding.

BY THE NUMBERS: 17-5 -- Diamondbacks' record in a 22-game stretch against the NL West that concluded April 27.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Every game counts. We'll take it. It's a 22-game block, more than a quarter of our games in the division. To do well is important. But some teams that were off to great starts last year didn't get to October, so we are not overestimating what happens. But it is good to win games in your division." -- General manager Josh Byrnes, on the D-backs' 17-5 record against the NL West.
