Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29
--OF Conor Jackson was named the NL Player of the Week on Monday, the second time this season he has won the award, after going 13-for-24 with three home runs, two doubles, nine runs and seven RBI. "This is a good feeling coming out of the break," Jackson said. Jackson finished the week with five straight multi-hit games, including all three of his home runs, and had a 1.083 slugging percentage.

--RHP Micah Owings gave up eight runs in three innings and appears in danger of losing his spot in the starting rotation. Owings started the season 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA, all the victories coming against the NL West, but he has not won since May 25. He is 0-6 with a 6.87 ERA in his last nine starts. RHP Yusmeiro Petit is a candidate to make a Saturday start in Los Angeles.

--LHP Doug Slaten (right knee) threw a bullpen session on Monday, the first time he has thrown off a mound since suffering a strained knee while pitching in a July 18 loss to Los Angeles. "It was a good first step," manager Bob Melvin said. Slaten will throw at least one more bullpen, Melvin said, and it is uncertain if he is able to return from the disabled list when eligible Aug. 3.

--OF Justin Upton (left oblique strain) hit soft toss in the indoor batting cage, the first time he has done that since suffering his injury during batting practice on July 9 at Washington, and the D-Backs were pleased with the result. "He was a little more violent with his swings and didn't feel anything. We're in good shape," manager Bob Melvin said. Upton is expected to take batting practice Wednesday or Thursday.

--RHP Juan Cruz (left oblique strain) is expected to make his second and final rehab appearance for Class AAA Tucson on Tuesday, and the D-backs would like him to throw 25-30 pitches to prepare for his role in middle relief when he returns to the active roster, likely Thursday in Los Angeles.

--1B Tony Clark is likely to start against San Diego RHP Chris Young on Tuesday night. Clark has four home runs in nine career at-bats against Young, and all the homers came last year. He hit two on April 26, one on June 14 and one on Sept. 4.

BY THE NUMBERS: .818 -- OF Conor Jackson's career batting average against San Francisco LHP Jonathan Sanchez, after Jackson doubled and homered off Sanchez on Friday. Jackson is 9-for-11 with a double and two homers off Sanchez.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The time of day we started was ridiculous. You couldn't see anything. It was almost scary. The sun was glaring off the backdrop (in center field) ... the ball is white, the backdrop is white. You don't pick the ball up. You can't tell what the spin is." -- 1B Chad Tracy, after a 6:05 pm start in San Francisco in a matchup of RHPs Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum.
