Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-07-11
--RHP Dan Haren was three outs from his first career shutout but did not even get a victory in his eighth consecutive quality start Thursday. An error contributed to Washington's two-run rally that tie the game at 2 in the ninth. Haren (8-5) lowered his ERA to 2.72. "Everything felt great. It's felt great the last two months," said Haren, the NL Pitcher of the Month in June and a leading candidate to start the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

--OF Justin Upton (left oblique) missed his second straight game in Washington, and the Diamondbacks plan to keep him out of their three-game series in Philadelphia this weekend that concludes the first half. Upton suffered his injury during batting practice Wednesday and was scratched from the lineup. "We'll re-evaluate during the All-Star break," manager Bob Melvin said. The Diamondbacks do not plan a roster move, Melvin said, and could again use RHP Micah Owings in pinch-hitting roles now that he has recovered from a gluteus maximus injury.

--With Upton and C Chris Snyder (testicular fracture) out this weekend, the Diamondbacks will be without two of their top six run producers in Philadelphia. Upton, on a six-game hitting streak, has 11 home runs and 31 RBIs. He is fourth on the team in homers, and his last one Sunday went 484 feet, the longest in the majors this season and the second longest in Chase Field history. Snyder, eligible to come off the disabled list after the All-Star break, has seven homers and 33 RBIs.

--OF Alex Romero, a rookie, started in place of Justin Upton in right field Thursday after rookie IF/OF Emilio Bonifacio started in right Wednesday.

--3B Mark Reynolds had three errors Thursday, giving him a major league-leading 19 -- 18 at third base and one at first base. "I tried to mess it up," said Reynolds, whose ninth-inning error enabled Washington to tie the game at 2-2. "They (his teammates) picked me up tonight. It was a tough night."

--RHP Brandon Webb and manager Bob Melvin met again Thursday to discuss Webb's possible appearance in the All-Star Game only two days after Webb's scheduled start Sunday in Philadelphia. "I'd like to pitch," said Webb, who has pitched in one of his two previous All-Star Games. "We're just going to play it by ear."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6 -- RHP Micah Owings had lost six consecutive decisions through July 9.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Unless we start playing better, it's not going to matter." -- Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, on still being in first place despite struggling for two months.
