Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-06-14
--1B Chad Tracy's walk-off home run in the 10th inning Friday was the first game-ending homer of his career. "Now that it's happened, I don't think there is any better feeling in baseball that winning the game with a walk-off home run," Tracy said. "It's special just because of all I've been through to try to get back here. Anything I can do to help this team right now is even better." Tracy rejoined the D-backs on May 26 after right knee surgery last September.

--RHP Billy Buckner was recalled from Class AAA Tucson on Friday and got into the mix immediately, pitching a scoreless 10th inning for his first D-backs' victory, his second in the majors after beating Cleveland while with Kansas City last year. Buckner added a fresh arm to a bullpen that had worked 23 innings in its previous five games. He was 4-5 with a 4.48 ERA in 14 starts for Tucson after being obtained from Kansas City in an off-season deal for IF Alberto Callaspo.

--RHP Max Scherzer was returned to Class AAA Tucson when Billy Buckner was recalled on Friday. Scherzer was 0-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 10 appearances with the D-Backs, who still plan to groom him as a starter and are not ready to pitch him on consecutive days this early in his development. "Max wasn't optioned down because of his performance. His performance was terrific," D-backs manager Bob Melvin said. "The past couple days, we've needed back-to-back days out of guys, and we are just not there with him yet. He has not done that before. I wasn't going to put him in that position." The D-backs are expected to put Scherzer back in the Tucson rotation after he is stretched out again.

--OF Trot Nixon was traded off the Tucson roster to the New York Mets on Friday for a player to be named or cash considerations. Nixon, a stalwart in Boston previously, signed with the D-backs in spring training and was hitting .309 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs for Tucson. He could have opted out of his contract next week to become a free agent. "With Eric Byrnes returning, we were just not going to have an opportunity" for Nixon, general manager Josh Byrnes said. "We understood at some point he wasn't going to spend the whole year in (Class AAA), especially if there was interest elsewhere. It's not a great business practice when a guy with that much time in the big leagues is willing to go to (Class AAA) to use that against him." The D-backs twice opted to promote OF Alex Romero instead of Nixon.

--OF Eric Byrnes hit off minor league right-hander Brett Reynolds in pre-game work Friday, the first time Byrnes has faced live pitching since May 26, the day before he was placed on the disabled list with sore hamstrings. "Hitting felt real good. I felt comfortable in the box," Byrnes said. "I ran as close to 100 percent as I have in weeks. It feels like months. Maybe even months." Byrnes could be activated Tuesday after an off day Monday, although no timetable has been made public.

-- 1B Conor Jackson started in left field for the second time in three games Friday, in order to get 1B Chad Tracy's bat into the lineup against Kansas City RHP Zack Greinke. Tracy singled and walked in his first two at-bats, then won the game with a walk-off homer. The D-backs had talked about playing Tracy in left field -- he played right field in 2005. "I just think (Jackson) has a little more experience out there and to an extent probably moves around a little better," manager Bob Melvin said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 63 -- Days since RHP Brandon Lyon gave up a run, on April 6 at Colorado. He has made 22 consecutive scoreless appearances.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've never really thought about much except for the situations I'm in. I try to go pitch by pitch, out by out, day by day. Not about the last pitch, but about the next pitch that is going to happen." -- RHP Brandon Lyon, about his 22 straight scoreless appearances since April 6.
