Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-05-29
--OF Justin Upton broke an 0-for-27 skid with a two-run double in the sixth inning of an 11-3 loss to San Francisco on Wednesday. Upton, who had 17 strikeouts and seven walks during that stretch, had one of each in his first two plate appearances before driving a ball to deep center. Upton's average has dropped to .275.

--RHP Brandon Lyon ran his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 19 with a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday. Lyon made only his third appearance since May 15, and none in a save situation, as the D-backs have lost eight of their last 11 games. Lyon, who has 12 saves, has not given up a run since April 6. His ERA is 1.64.

--OF Eric Byrnes, on the disabled list with two ailing hamstrings, plans to see San Carlos, Calif., chiropractor Nick Athens this week for a hip alignment. Athens saw Byrnes when the Diamondbacks were in San Francisco in April, and Byrnes said Athens treated him when a similar issue occurred during his time with Oakland. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and former 49ers stars Joe Montana and Jerry Rice are among those Athens has treated, according to his Web site. "It's another tool we can use," Byrnes said.

--3B Mark Reynolds, back in the lineup after a day off, homered and singled to break a 5-for-24 streak. It was Reynolds' second homer in five days, and his second in May after he hit seven in April.

--LHP Randy Johnson will enter his Thursday start nine strikeouts short of Roger Clemens for No. 2 in major league history. Johnson had 10 strikeouts in a no-decision Saturday in Atlanta to give him 4,663. Nolan Ryan, who served as a mentor for Johnson earlier in his career, has 5,714.

--RHP Juan Cruz left Wednesday's game with one out in the sixth inning, when he felt a twinge in his neck after giving up a two-run double to Bengie Molina.

BY THE NUMBERS: 4,663 -- Strikeouts by LHP Randy Johnson after he whiffed 10 at Atlanta on May 24, leaving him nine short of Roger Clemens for No. 2 on the career list behind Nolan Ryan (5,714).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everybody kind of realized what they are all about today, a little more than baseball. When he took the mound, he had to have some goose bumps. But once he got into the flow of the game, it was just another game. He's an amazing guy." -- D-backs manager Bob Melvin, after LHP Doug Davis beat Atlanta, 11-1, on Friday, pitching 43 days after a cancerous thyroid was removed.
