Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-05-13
--SS Josh Wilson became the fifth position player in team history to pitch for the D-backs when he threw a scoreless ninth inning in Monday's 13-5 loss to Cincinnati. He got a flyout and a double-play grounder using a fastball that registered 88 mph on the Chase Field radar gun. OF Steve Finley, 1B Mark Grace, INF Jeff Cirillo and INF Augie Ojeda also have pitched an inning apiece for Arizona.

--2B Felipe Lopez is enjoying his reunion tour this week. Lopez was 5-for-14 with a double and two runs against Washington over the weekend and has five hits in eight at-bats in the first two games of a series against Cincinnati. He doubled home the D-backs' only run Tuesday. Lopez joined the Reds in 2003 and was traded to the Nationals during the 2006 season before spending the last two months of last season with St. Louis.

--RHP Esmerling Vasquez recorded his first major league victory Sunday in the D-backs' 10-8 victory over Washington, as did manager A.J. Hinch. It was the 19th time in modern major league history that a manager and a pitcher recorded their first victories in the same game, most recently when Milwaukee manager Dale Sveum and RHP Mark DiFelice paired up in the Brewers' 6-2 victory over the Cubs last Sept. 17, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Hinch received the game ball and has it in his office.

--RHP Bryan Augenstein will start Wednesday, the D-backs announced, to replace RHP Yusmeiro Petit (shoulder) in the rotation. Augenstein, 22, is 5-0 with an 0.78 ERA in six starts at Class AA Mobile, with 31 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .145 against him. A seventh-round pick in the 2007 draft out of the University of Florida, Augenstein will not be purchased until necessary so the D-backs can keep another arm in the bullpen. It will be his major league debut.

BY THE NUMBERS: .195 -- D-backs' batting average with runners in scoring position, a major league low, through May 10.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The lack of experience is overwhelmed by understanding what organizational advocacy is. We're not here to reinvent the wheel, but to change the nature of the job a little bit. OK, we'll do that." -- General manager Josh Byrnes, announcing new manager A.J. Hinch's hiring to replace Bob Melvin. Hinch, former director of player development, had never coached or managed.
