Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-05-11
--RHP Max Scherzer left with a 5-4 lead after five innings Sunday but the bullpen was unable to hold his lead, leaving him winless in his 13 major league starts, six this season. Scherzer gave up three home runs in a game for the first time in his major league career. He had given up one homer in 26 2/3 innings before Sunday's game and gave up only five in 56 innings as a rookie in 2008.

--RHP Bryan Augenstein will start Wednesday, the D-backs announced, to replace RHP Yusmeiro Petit (shoulder) in the rotation. Augenstein, 22, is 5-0 with an 0.78 ERA in six starts at Class AA Mobile, with 31 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .145 against him. A seventh-round pick in the 2007 draft out of the University of Florida, Augenstein will not be purchased until necessary so the D-backs can keep another arm in the bullpen. It will be his major league debut.

--RHP Yusmeiro Petit (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list Saturday, a day after giving up four runs and six hits in four innings of a 5-4 loss to Washington. Petit is 0-3 with an 8.03 ERA this season while being burdened with the unenviable task of taking RHP Brandon Webb's rotation spot. Webb (shoulder) made one start before going on the disabled list. The D-backs are 0-5 in Petit's five fill-in starts.

--RHP Bobby Korecky was recalled from Class AAA Reno to take Yusmeiro Petit's the roster spot Saturday. Korecky was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in four appearances in a previous stint with the D-backs, when he was recalled April 15. He was returned to the minor leagues April 26 when RHP Esmerling Vasquez was recalled.

BY THE NUMBERS: .195 -- D-backs' batting average with runners in scoring position, a major league low.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The lack of experience is overwhelmed by understanding what organizational advocacy is. We're not here to reinvent the wheel, but to change the nature of the job a little bit. OK, we'll do that." -- General manager Josh Byrnes, announcing new manager A.J. Hinch's hiring to replace Bob Melvin. Hinch, former director of player development, has never coached or managed.
