Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-04-18
--The D-backs are prepared to face old friend LHP Randy Johnson in San Francisco on Sunday. "We knew it was coming soon. We might as well get it out of the way," manager Bob Melvin said. Johnson, who won four consecutive NL Cy Young awards with the D-backs from 1999-2002, will make his first appearance against Arizona in his 22-year career, the only team he has never faced. Johnson holds D-backs records for victories (118), starts (232), innings (1,630 1/3), strikeouts (2,077), qualified ERA (2.83) complete games (38) and shutouts (14).

--RHP Tom Gordon pitched two innings Thursday in an extended spring training game at the D-backs' minor league complex in Tucson and is expected to pitch in a rehab game for Class AAA Reno on Sunday. Gordon is likely to get four or five rehab appearances before joining the D-backs, perhaps by the home series against the Chicago Cubs on April 27-29. The D-backs' bullpen has 6.75 ERA.

--The D-backs lost all three home series to open the season, losing two of three games in each, during a stretch in which they play 18 of their first 21 games at home. Their trip to San Francisco this weekend is their only road foray until an eight-game trip that begins in Milwaukee and runs from April 30 to May 3. "We haven't gotten off to a great start at home. It will be nice to get on the road for a few days," manager Bob Melvin said.

--RHP Tony Pena has entrenched himself as the eighth-inning setup man 10 days into the season, giving up one run and three hits in six appearances. Pena, closer Chad Qualls and lefty specialist Scott Schoeneweis are the only D-backs secure in their bullpen roles. With a 9.64 ERA, RHP Jon Rauch already has lost his setup role. Rauch has given up six hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.

--OF/1B Conor Jackson and 3B Mark Reynolds became the second pair of D-backs to have pinch home runs in the same game when they did it n a 7-6, 10-inning victory over St. Louis on Tuesday. OF David Dellucci and 1B Greg Colbrunn had pinch homers against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 12, 2001, the season in which the D-backs led the major leagues with 14 pinch homers.

--D-backs bench coach Kirk Gibson was saddened by the death of former Detroit RHP Mark Fidrych on Monday. Gibson played with Fidrych while he was on rehab assignments at Class A Lakeland and Class AAA Evansville, and Fidrych and Dave Rozema, Gibson's brother-in-law, were roommates with the Tigers. "'Bird' was a very outgoing, charismatic, friendly guy. He enjoyed life every day," Gibson said. Fidrych visited with Gibson when the D-backs played in Boston last season. "He loved his farm. He loved his truck," Gibson said. "He was a very energetic guy."

BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Consecutive opening-day starts in which 1B Tony Clark has homered: 2009 (D-backs, twice), 2004 (New York Yankees), 2003 (New York Mets) and 2002 (Boston).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There's no concern. The MRIs are all good. I mean, if there's no structural damage, there's nothing to worry about." -- RHP Brandon Webb, after being placed on the disabled list April 12 with shoulder soreness.
