Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-09-04

Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-09-04--RHP Kevin Mulvey pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning Thursday in his first appearance with the D-backs since being acquired in a waiver trade from Minnesota on Tuesday. Mulvey got two flyouts and a strikeout, whiffing Dodgers OF Matt Kemp. Mulvey, 24, had two previous relief outings with the Twins this season, giving up four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. The D-backs consider Mulvey a starting candidate going forward after his 78 starts in the last three minor league seasons. He was 5-8 with a 3.93 ERA in 24 starts at Class AAA Rochester this season, and manager A.J. Hinch left open the possibility of him getting a start in the final 4 1/2 weeks.

--RHP Daniel Cabrera, who signed a minor league contract in August, is scheduled to join the D-backs on Friday after going 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA with 10 walks and 11 strikeouts over 14 2/3 innings in four games at Class AAA Reno. Cabrera, who has spent six seasons in the majors, likely will be used out of the bullpen. "We want to take a look at him and kind of see where he's at," manager A.J. Hinch said. "His velocity has picked up from the moment we signed him through his outings. His command has gotten a little better. He's always battled command issues throughout his career. He's got good stuff when he's in the strike zone." Cabrera's fastball was timed in the high-90s while he was with Baltimore.

--RHP Max Scherzer helped himself at the plate with a single and a walk Wednesday, and his two-out hit with a runner on first base in the fifth off RHP Chad Billingsley set the stage for the final two runs of a four-run inning. Scherzer is hitting .191, and he has all nine of his career hits this season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Players in Diamondbacks history to hit 40 home runs in a season after 3B Mark Reynolds hit No. 40 on Aug. 29. OF Luis Gonzalez, who announced his retirement to join the D-backs' front office earlier that day, had 57 in 2001.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've not really thought about it. I just go out there every day and sharpen my cleats, and I'm just able to hit a home run every now and then." -- D-backs third baseman Mark Reynolds, after hitting his 40th homer.
