Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2009-01-21
--RHP Chad Qualls avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2,535,000 deal.

--The D-backs contacted the representatives of RHP Jon Garland but were unable to reach a contract agreement with him as they continue to fish the wide pool of free agent starting pitchers in search of a relative bargain. Garland made $12 million last season, but the D-backs' offer was only about one-third of that figure.

--Veteran free agent pitchers such as RHP Braden Looper, RHP Pedro Martinez, RHP Jason Jennings and RHP Kris Benson are the caliber of talent the D-backs are hoping to add to their rotation in the absence of LHP Randy Johnson. RHPs Brandon Webb, Dan Haren and Max Scherzer and LHP Doug Davis are already in the rotation.

--C Miguel Montero remains of interest to Boston, which rejected a trade offer at the winter meetings that would have brought RHP Michael Bowden to the D-backs. Montero is a strong hitter, with 16 doubles in 188 at-bats last season, but he is considered more expendable after the D-backs signed starting C Chris Snyder to a three-year, $14 million extension. The D-backs also acquired C James Skelton from Detroit in the Rule 5 draft.

--3B Agustin Murillo is a strong contender for MVP award in the Mexican Pacific League after hitting .345 with 30 doubles, 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 66 games for Obregon. He was leading the league in hits and doubles and was slugging .595 with an OPS of 1.031. Murillo, a native of Tijuana, played the 2008 regular season at Monterrey on loan from the D-backs. He hit .322 with 10 homers and 57 RBIs in 96 games with the Sultanes.

--The D-backs will play an exhibition game against the team that will represent Mexico in the World Baseball Classic on March 6 in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The D-backs have played spring training exhibition games in Hermosillo in previous seasons and consider northern Mexico a part of their marketing thrust.

BY THE NUMBERS: .152 -- The difference between home and road batting average last season by OF Justin Upton, who hit .321 at home and .169 on the road.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Retaining core players is very important to us. In the last few years, we have signed several players to long-term deals and bought approximately 15 years of free agency in those contracts." -- General manager Josh Byrnes, whose D-backs bought out a year of C Chris Snyder's free agency with a three-year, $14 million contract extension.
