Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-11-10
--RHP Edgar Gonzalez was outrighted off the major league roster prior to the general managers meetings in Dana Point, Calif. Gonzalez missed the second half of 2008 after suffering a strained elbow that he opted to treat with rest and rehab rather than surgery. Gonzalez hoped to pitch for Hermosillo in the Mexican winter league but had not appeared in a game yet. Gonzalez was 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA in 17 games before his injury, and he was 8-4 with a 5.03 ERA in 2007.

--1B Javier Brito was outrighted off the major league roster Nov. 4 after spending one year on the major league roster. Brito, 25, was an imposing hitter in 2007, batting .327 with 11 homers and 72 RBIs at Class AA Mobile. He hit .170 in 18 games at Class AAA Tucson to open 2008 before being returned to Mobile, where he hit .269 with 12 homers in 63 games.

--RHP Brandon Lyon, 1B Tony Clark, 1B/OF Adam Dunn and 2B Orlando Hudson filed for free agency, leaving only LHP Randy Johnson on the fence before the Nov. 13 deadline for filing. Lyon spent the first five months of 2008 as the closer before losing his job to RHP Chad Qualls, but he appears willing to return to the D-backs in a setup role. Agent Barry Meister said Lyon "loves it there."

--Even if LHP Randy Johnson does not return, general manager Josh Byrnes said the D-backs are unlikely to go outside the organization for a fifth starter behind RHP Brandon Webb, RHP Dan Haren, LHP Doug Davis and RHP Max Scherzer. "I think we're comfortable," Byrnes said. "There are a lot of ways to solve that. If (RHP Yusmiero) Petit ends up as the leading candidate" for the final spot in the rotation, "we could see that." Petit was 3-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 2008. He average three strikeouts per walk and had a ratio of hits and walks to innings pitched of 1.05.

--2B Orlando Hudson had his three-year Gold Glove streak ended by injury. Hudson won Gold Gloves for Toronto in 2005 and the D-backs in 2006-07 before missing the final seven weeks of the 2008 season with a left wrist injury.

--The D-backs are down to 34 players on their 40-man roster.

BY THE NUMBERS: 15 -- Arizona victories over Colorado in 2008, the most by any team over another in the NL. AL champion Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 15 times, tying for the major league high.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think we're comfortable. There are a lot of ways to solve that." -- General manager Josh Byrnes, on the possibility of replacing LHP Randy Johnson from within if Johnson leaves via free agency.
