Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-09-17
--SS Stephen Drew hit a bases-empty home run in the sixth inning Tuesday, his first game back since missing two games to attend funeral services for his grandmother in Georgia. Drew has 37 doubles, 11 triples and 18 home runs, three doubles and two home runs from joining Robin Yount (twice) and Nomar Garciaparra as the only shortstops to have 40 doubles, 10 triples and 20 homers in the same season.

--RHP Dan Haren (15-8) pitched his first career shutout Tuesday, a few hours before turning 28 on Wednesday. Haren tied his career high with 12 strikeouts in a game and victories in a season, ending a skid in which he gave up 26 earned runs in his previous 40 1/3 innings. "I was trying to get back to basics. I've been struggling for a while. It's nice to get that feeling back again," said Haren, who threw 117 pitches.

--OF Conor Jackson (right shoulder) played catch early Tuesday but was not cleared for the game, missing his fifth straight. "He was not as far along as I want to have him," manager Bob Melvin said. Jackson is hitting .294 with 12 homers and 72 RBIs as the D-backs' primary No. 3 hitter. The D-backs are 3-2 in the games he has missed.

--OF Chris Young did not start Tuesday after suffering a left wrist injury during a swing late in Monday's game, manager Bob Melvin said, although Young entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. Young has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 starts.

--RHP Chad Qualls was unavailable Tuesday after pitching in three of the previous four and six of the previous nine games. He is tied for ninth in the majors with 72 appearances and tied for 19th with 68 2/3 relief innings, and the D-backs want to make sure they do not overextend him. "His velocity was down a little bit, but he was effective enough to get the outs," manager Bob Melvin said after Qualls saved Monday's game. Qualls has been scored upon only once in his last 20 outings, and his ERA since Aug. 6 is 0.46.

BY THE NUMBERS: 8 -- Games the D-backs lost to Los Angeles in a span of 12 days, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 10.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "From here on out, it's like the World Series every game. That's the way I look at it. We can't give Los Angeles any ground. We have to put pressure on them and keep the pressure on them." -- RHP Chad Qualls.
