Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11
--OF/1B Adam Dunn has shown to be a much subtler hitter that his all-or-nothing numbers -- 36 homers, 146 strikeouts, 109 walks -- would suggest, according to manager Bob Melvin. "He is a better (pure) hitter than that. He doesn't take a lot of bad swings. He doesn't get fooled a lot. He makes pitchers work harder" because of his selectivity. Dunn is hitting .267 with six doubles, four homers and a .452 on-base percentage in his 26 games since his Aug. 11 acquisition from Cincinnati, who will visit Chase Field this weekend. "He's a tough guy," Melvin said.

--RHP Jon Rauch received words of encouragement from manager Bob Melvin in a pregame meeting Wednesday morning, hours after Rauch got beat in the ninth inning Tuesday to fall to 0-5 with a 6.41 ERA in 22 appearances since joining the D-backs on July 22. "He's having issues with (throwing quality strikes) and with confidence," Melvin said. "He's never been through struggles like this before, and he struggles with how he deals with it."

--LHP Randy Johnson was given a scheduled MRI on his lower back in Phoenix on Tuesday, a proactive measure after his surgeries the previous two years. It was not known if Johnson took an MRI on his left shoulder, which forced him to miss a scheduled start Sunday because of inflammation. Johnson threw on flat ground at trainer Brett Fischer's facility Tuesday and is expected to make his next start Saturday against Cincinnati.

--2B David Eckstein was given a day off Wednesday after going hitless in his 15 at-bats on the road trip. Augie Ojeda started at second base and went 0-for-3.

--RHP Brandon Lyon squandered a 3-2, ninth-inning lead at San Francisco, suffering his sixth blown save of the season. He is 26-for-32 in save opportunities.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Players in franchise history with seasons that included double-digit doubles, triples and homers: Stephen Drew (2008) and Steve Finley (1999, 2003).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Offensively, he's growing at the rate we felt he could. Defensively, he's as solid as anyone in the league." -- D-backs third base and infield coach Chip Hale, on SS Stephen Drew's breakout season.
