Arizona Diamondbacks Notes, Quotes 2008-09-09
--RHP Max Scherzer had a career-high 11 strikeouts in five innings Sunday, although he did not get a decision in a 5-3 loss to Los Angeles. Still, he likely earned another start, perhaps as early as Sunday. Scherzer hit 99 mph on the Dodger Stadium radar gun in the first inning and was still sitting at 98 mph in the fifth. "It was a big game for us, but for me it didn't change anything," Scherzer said. "The mound is still 60 feet, 6 inches. I was relaxed. It doesn't matter how well I pitch. I want the win."

--SS Stephen Drew needs three doubles to become the fifth shortstop in N.L. history with 40 doubles, 10 triples and 10 homers in a season, joining Arky Vaughn (Pittsburgh, 1934), Jimmy Rollins (Philadelphia, 2004), Jack Wilson (Pittsburgh, 2004) and Hanley Ramirez (Florida, 2006). Drew has 37 doubles, 11 triples and 16 home runs.

--OF Chris Young hit his 40th double of the season in the first inning to become the third player in franchise history with 40 in a season. Luis Gonzalez did it four times and Chad Tracy once.

--OF Justin Upton made his third consecutive start in right field Monday, his longest run since returning from a strained oblique muscle Aug. 29. He is 3-for-12 in that span and drove in the only two runs in a 7-2 loss Saturday. But he lost OF Manny Ramirez's flyball in the sun, and it fell for a two-run double. He also was charged with an error when he dropped a ball while attempting to transfer it from his glove to his hand Sunday. He leads major league outfielders with 10 errors. "He's going to make some mistakes," manager Bob Melvin said. "Experience comes with reps and games played."

--3B Mark Reynolds has reached base six times in the last two games -- on a double, three singles and two walks -- after sitting out Saturday's game against Los Angeles.

--The D-backs are 0-3 in five starts against Giants RHP Tim Lincecum, with 44 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings since he arrived in the majors last May. "He pitched an amazing game, but we have to find a way no matter who's pitching, whether it is Lincecum or Jake Peavy or Derek Lowe," OF Chris Young said. "We need to find a way to turn it around."

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Players in franchise history with seasons that included double-digit doubles, triples and homers: Stephen Drew (2008) and Steve Finley (1999, 2003).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Offensively, he's growing at the rate we felt he could. Defensively, he's as solid as anyone in the league." -- D-backs third base and infield coach Chip Hale, on SS Stephen Drew's breakout season.
