The Diamondbacks understand that the final two months of competition in the National League West got a little more interesting when the Dodgers acquired Manny Ramirez on Thursday, but they are conceding nothing.

"(Ramirez) is definitely a great hitter," first baseman Chad Tracy said. "But like I've said, we like our team. We have to deal with the situation, but we still feel we're the best team in the division."

Lefty Randy Johnson, who is expected to face Ramirez when he reports Friday, said the move reminds him of something a former employer might do.

"It's almost like the New York Yankees' West Coast team. The West Coast Yankees," Johnson said. "They have a lot of money already committed to players, but they can go out and get more players. They have so much depth now.

"I think they are trying to be able to slug their way past some teams. They have some good pitching. They just haven't been able to score runs."

The Diamondbacks, who lead the Dodgers by two games after righty Brandon Webb won his eighth consecutive start against them Thursday, did their trade deadline work early, acquiring first baseman Tony Clark at the All-Star break and righty Jon Rauch four days later.

"As we hoped, we're playing better, swinging the bats better and pitching better," said general manager Josh Byrnes, who said the team had no trades to make after Atlanta opted to take the Angels' offer of first baseman Casey Kotchman and a mid-level prospect for first baseman Mark Teixeira.

"We feel like our club is capable of winning the division, and if we get there, we can be a good October team," Byrnes said.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, DODGERS 1: RHP Brandon Webb became the first in the majors to reach 15 victories by winning his eighth consecutive decision against the Dodgers, giving up six hits and striking out six in eight innings. LF Conor Jackson doubled and scored to open a two-run seventh inning, then made the defensive play of the game by throwing out Dodgers OF Andre Ethier at the plate to complete a double play to end the eighth inning. RHP Brandon Lyon got his 23rd save.
