Right-handed starting pitcher Brandon Webb said Friday that he has decided to end talks with the Diamondbacks about a contract extension this season.

Webb, 11-3 with a 3.27 ERA, leads the major leagues in victories and is considered a top NL candidate to start the All-Star Game.

The sides had been talking on and off since spring training, but Webb indicated that negotiations had become something of a distraction. He is working on the third year of a four-year, $19.5 million deal with a D-backs' option for $8.5 million in 2010.

"It is kind of hard to do stuff out there on the mound and not know if that is going to help you or hurt you in the meantime," Webb said. "It does kind of weigh on your mind. I'm done talking about it. It's gone on for five months."

It is unclear what Webb is seeking, but as one of the top pitchers in the league, he might expect to earn a contract similar to the three-year, $52 million extension signed by San Diego's Jake Peavy in the offseason.

Webb won the NL Cy Young Award in 2006 and Peavy won it last year, when Webb finished second.

"I felt that we were close. Things just didn't pan out," Webb said. "I still have 2-1/2 years here. There is definitely still time."

TWINS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2: LHP Randy Johnson was victimized by one big inning, a six-run third in which he gave up two infield hits, but steadied himself Friday to record his 99th career complete game. 3B Mark Reynolds had his 16th home run of the season and drove in the other D-backs' run with a groundout. DH Chad Tracy had a single in four at-bats as the D-backs used the DH for the first of six straight interleague road games.
