First baseman Conor Jackson started in left field in three of the last five games as the Diamondbacks attempted to add some punch to an offense that has struggled to score runs after a torrid April.

The move permits manager Bob Melvin to insert Chad Tracy at first base while keeping powerful Mark Reynolds in the lineup when an opponent throws a right-handed pitcher.

Reynolds and Jackson are 1-2 on the D-backs in RBIs, and when Tracy plays Melvin can use those three in the 4-5-6 production spots in the batting order following Chris Young, Stephen Drew and Orlando Hudson.

Tracy hit a walk-off home run, the first of his career, in a 1-0, 10-inning victory over Kansas City on Friday. It was his third home run in 40 at-bats since returning to the D-backs on May 26 after undergoing micro-fracture surgery on his right knee in September.

Jackson is no stranger to the outfield, having played his first two minor league seasons there before being introduced to first base in the spring of 2005.

"I'm pretty comfortable with it. It's not my first rodeo," said Jackson, who was 4-for-14 with an RBI in his first three games in left and made an over-the-shoulder catch to take a hit away from Mets OF Endy Chavez on Wednesday.

At the same time, the move is likely temporary, since outfielder Eric Byrnes (hamstrings) is considered close to returning from the disabled list. Byrnes has suffered hamstring injuries since spring training and been on the DL since May 27.

ROYALS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 3: RHP Micah Owings gave up a grand slam home run to OF David DeJesus with two outs in the fourth inning after failing to handle RHP Gil Meche's two-out, bases-loaded hard grounder back to the mound, the ball bouncing off Owings' glove and rolling behind the mound for an infield single. Owings has given up 21 earned runs in his last 19 innings. 3B Mark Reynolds tripled and scored twice.
