Manager Bob Melvin's clubhouse meeting Saturday seems to have gotten the Diamondbacks back on track.

While Melvin did not disclose too many details, his message of focus and perspective struck a receptive chord for a team that finished 11-17 in May, its first losing month since September, 2006. The D-backs were 20-8 in April.

"Basically, it came down to we had to lock a few things in. When things are going good, the game is a lot easier. Everybody is swinging the bat, and you put a lot of runs up on the board," Chris Young said after a 5-0 victory over Washington on Sunday.

"It's times like lately, when we haven't been scoring as many runs, when you need to look at the little things again. Start running the bases better. Moving the runner over better. Busting our behinds in the field to try to make a play.

"It comes down to things like the way you practice, your focus when you practice, your focus right before the game" in the clubhouse. "That's something we just had to make a minor adjustment on and get back on track."

The D-backs broke a five-game losing streak after Melvin's meeting Saturday, when Brandon Webb pitched his eighth career shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Nationals. Dan Haren followed with seven shutout innings Sunday.

The D-backs' lead in the NL West entering Saturday's game was 2-1/2 games, and it had not been lower since April 16.

"'Webby' came out yesterday and did what an ace is supposed to do. All of us look up to him, anyway, and he came out and set the tone. He took it upon himself to end what we were going through, and I think -- hopefully -- we've taken the next step," Haren said.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, NATIONALS 0: Dan Haren threw seven scoreless innings as the D-backs recorded their second consecutive shutout of Washington, the first time they have had back-to-back shutouts since May 26-27, 2007. Orlando Hudson extended his hitting streak to eight games with a three-run home run in the first inning, his third homer in seven games. Chad Tracy had his second homer in three games.
