Outfielder Justin Upton admitted to frustration during his recent hitting skid, but his teammates did not see a change in demeanor from the player who helped carry the Diamondbacks in April.

"He's not what we call a 'happy hitter,' who is happy when he is hitting and silent in the clubhouse when he is not hitting," outfielder Chris Young said. "He had the same personality and went into the cages with the same confidence. ... That says a lot about him. It says that when he does have slumps from now on, he will get out of them that much quicker. He never stops believing in himself."

Upton hit a two-run double Wednesday to break an 0-for-27 skid that included 18 strikeouts, then added a 438-foot home run and a run-scoring triple in a 4-3 loss to San Francisco on Thursday.

Upton's homer was his seventh of the year, his first since May 5 and his second since April 12, a stretch of 137 at-bats. He helped carry the Diamondbacks in April, hitting .327 with six doubles and five homers.

"It was obviously frustrating. My confidence never wavered," said Upton, who said frequent talks with his brother, Tampa Bay center fielder B J. Upton, helped.

"He'd tell me little things to keep my head off struggling. He's been through it. We've all been through it. It's always something small that gets you back on track."

Young saw a maturity that was impressive in a player of 20.

"It's easy to start questioning your ability, especially as a young player who has not been through it," Young said.

GIANTS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3: Randy Johnson tied Roger Clemens for second place in major league history with 4,672 strikeouts by getting nine Thursday, but the Diamondbacks could not hold onto his 289th career victory after he left with a 3-2 lead in the seventh. The Giants tied the game in the eighth on two walks, a hit batter and an infield error, and Randy Winn's second homer of the game won it in the ninth. Winn has 10 homers against the Diamondbacks, more than against any other team.
