Arizona Diamondbacks Inside Pitch 2009-05-13

Arizona Diamondbacks Inside Pitch 2009-05-13
The Diamondbacks got younger when they promoted A.J. Hinch to manager Friday, and they have gotten even younger since.

Left-hander Clay Zavada, 24, was recalled from Class AA Mobile to add an arm to a thin bullpen Tuesday, and two more fresh faces will join the D-backs -- right-hander Bryan Augenstein, 22, and outfielder Gerardo Parra, 22, this week.

Augenstein will make his major league debut in a start against Cincinnati on Wednesday, while Parra will add outfield depth after Conor Jackson was placed on the disabled list Monday because of what the D-backs are calling a "general illness." The D-backs had only three true outfielders for their game against Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Augenstein will replace Yusmeiro Petit (shoulder) in the rotation after going 5-0 with a microscopic 0.78 ERA in six starts at Mobile. A strike-thrower who pitches to contact, Augenstein held Southern League opponents to a .145 batting average while striking out 31 and permitting six walks in 34 2/3 innings.

"He has really learned to pitch," Hinch said. "He's a pitcher, with good stuff. He comes right at them. He understands how to pitch above the barrel (of the bat), below the barrel."

After an off day Thursday, the D-backs are scheduled to play 20 consecutive days, and Hinch indicated that Augenstein would remain in the rotation and get several more starts. It is possible that Zavada will be returned to the minor leagues when Augenstein's contract is officially purchased from Mobile on Thursday.

Mobile announced the promotion of Parra on Tuesday, but he will not be added to the roster until Wednesday. Parra is hitting .361 at Mobile with three homers, 12 RBIs and seven stolen bases. He is considered the best position player prospect in the system.

REDS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1: Dan Haren again was the victim of non-support, as the D-backs were shut out in his seven innings while losing the fourth of five games in their six-game homestand. Haren fell to 3-4, although his ERA is 2.09. The D-backs have scored zero, one, zero, two, seven, four, three and zero runs while he has been on the mound in his eight starts, covering 56 innings. Felipe Lopez had his second straight multi-hit game and drove in the D-backs' only run with an eighth-inning double. The D-backs were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
