After that, however, Roberts hustled out to the bullpen to take care of his other business as the third catcher. He warmed up closer Chad Qualls, whose ninth-inning save preserved the victory. Roberts has done that several times this season when the D-backs have two pitchers up in the bullpen at the same time.
"That's a part of what I need to do this year," said Roberts, who made the D-backs as the 13th and final position player out of spring training after cups of coffee with Toronto (2006-07) and Texas (2008). He said coaches and veteran Tony Clark have helped him adapt to a part-time role.
Roberts, 28, showed his intensity after his single Wednesday, clapping his hands together and making a small jump at second base after taking an extra base on the throw from the outfield.
"It's just kind of how I play. When you work so hard to prepare, it kind of takes you over some times," he said. "I just try to stay ready and try to prepare myself every time."
Manager Bob Melvin said: "He has the most difficult role for us. To have an at-bat like that in a big game means that he is prepared and he stays ready. It's difficult to be the 25th guy and backup for every spot in the game."
