Pencil first baseman Tony Clark into the opening-day lineup in 2010. It is the percentage play.

The switch-hitting Clark hit two home runs, one from each side of the plate, and drove in three runs in the Diamondbacks' 9-8 victory over Colorado in the 2009 season opener Monday. But that should have been no surprise.

Clark, 36, has homered in the last four opening days in which he has drawn a start. He homered for the New York Yankees in their season opener in 2004, for the Mets in 2003 and for Boston in 2002.

"It's special," Clark admitted about starting the opener. "You only get so many opening days. You always think you are going to play 20 years and ride off into the sunset, but it doesn't work out that way. So every time you have an opportunity to put on a big-league uniform and run out there on opening day, whether as a starter or not, you can appreciate the situation and the opportunity you get."

Clark was only 4-for-21 against Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook, who started Monday, but two of his hits were home runs, and he had seven RBIs. His two-run homer off Cook gave the D-backs a 6-4 lead in the third inning Monday.

Clark has homered from both sides of the plate in a game 10 times in his career, one short of the major league record shared by Eddie Murray and Chili Davis.

ROCKIES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0: RHP Ubaldo Jiminez got his first career victory against the D-backs, giving up four hits while striking out eight in seven scoreless innings before giving way to RHP Manny Corpas and then RHP Huston Street, who got his first NL save. Colorado SS Troy Tulowitzki hit his second home run in as many games, this one off RHP Dan Haren, to break a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. SS Stephen Drew had two of the D-backs' five hits and their only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth. He was the only D-back to get as far as second base in the final seven innings.
