Like the athletes he once represented, Jeff Moorad is attempting to take another step up an organizational ladder.
Moorad, a one-time super agent, resigned from the Diamondbacks' ownership group Jan. 2 in order to pursue the acquisition of the San Diego Padres from owner John Moores, who recently hired the firm of Goldman Sachs to search for a potential buyer. Moores is involved in divorce proceedings. Moorad was one of five D-backs' ownership partners, including managing general partner Ken Kendrick, Dale Jensen, Mike Chipman and Jeff Royer. Moorad will have to sell his small interest in the D-backs if he is successful in purchasing the Padres.
"Jeff has established himself through the years with us, and I think Major League Baseball, from discussions I've had with them directly, would be comfortable with him controlling an ownership group with another club," Kendrick said.
Moorad attended UCLA and received a law degree from Villanova before forming Moorad Sports Management in 1983, growing a client base that eventually included such stars as Manny Ramirez and Ivan Rodriguez. He has homes in Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Newport Beach, Calif.
