Fearful that Adam Dunn would accept salary arbitration and certain that Randy Johnson would, the Diamondbacks did not offer arbitration to either at the Dec. 1 deadline.

Dunn and Johnson certainly would have been awarded contracts worth at least $10 million in arbitration, and the D-backs say they have only that much to spend this offseason and have other holes to fill.

"Based on the economy and how it appears to be affecting the marketplace, we dealt with the reality that either might accept," general manager Josh Byrnes said. "The market could be either under-funded or not be there for them."

The D-backs acquired Dunn from Cincinnati on Aug. 11 in an attempt to add offense and maintain their NL West lead, trading right-hander Micah Owings, minor league catcher/infielder Wilkin Castillo and minor league right-hander Dallas Buck.

The D-backs made the trade with the idea that if Dunn did not return in 2009, they would at least have the draft picks -- a pick in the first round, depending on the team that signed him, and a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds.

"There are short-term implications. There are long-term implications," Byrnes said. "We were hoping to get the draft picks. A lot has happened in the last four months to change our analysis."

Dunn has hit at least 40 home runs in each of the last five seasons, but with outfielder Pat Burrell and first baseman Jason Giambi also available, Byrnes said the market for Dunn "was not obvious to us," hence the decision not to gamble on arbitration.
