The Diamondbacks entered the general managers meetings with only one position -- second base -- that they believed required immediate attention.

"Primarily, we have to deal with second base somehow," general manager Josh Byrnes said. "Other than that, we will be a little bit patient."

With regular second baseman Orlando Hudson certain to make more on the market than the D-backs have for him in their budget, the team has talked about moving third baseman Mark Reynolds to second, but Byrnes made that sound like a Plan B.

"It could be either," Byrnes said while talking about adding a second or third baseman, but if Reynolds were to be moved "we would have to find a third baseman we liked. In our assessment, there is probably more selection at second base."

The D-backs will consider adding via trade or free agency, and with veteran or young players, Byrnes said.

Second basemen Ray Durham, 36, and Felipe Lopez, 28, are in the free agent pool, although each could cost at least $5 million, more than the D-backs are likely to consider spending.

The Brewers declined the 2009 option on infielder Craig Counsell, 38, a member of the D-backs' 2001 World Series team, putting him on the open market.

Pittsburgh is said to be interested in trading second baseman Freddy Sanchez, who was in the Boston organization when Byrnes there as well, but Sanchez is owed $14.1 million over the next two seasons, including his 2010 option of $8.1 million.
