Chris Young has never stopped working on his approach at the plate this season, and it appears he has settled on one that suits him well.

Young, in his second full major league season, is hitting .277 in 63 games after the All-Star break, with 20 of his career-high 42 doubles and eight of his 21 home runs.

He has joined Luis Gonzalez (three times), Chad Tracy and this year Stephen Drew as the only players in franchise history to have 40 doubles and 20 homers in the same season.

"You're seeing a player learning himself better," manager Bob Melvin said.

Young said it is a continual trial-and-error process.

"You make little adjustments as the season goes on. By this time, you look at the swing and approach, and it's a little bit different. You get more comfortable learning what adjustments pitchers make against you. Before you know it, your approach has gotten better," he said.

Young, hitting .247 with 83 RBIs overall, has found a way to attack the outside pitch while remembering to play to his strength, which is driving the inside pitch to his pull field, where he hits most of his home runs.

"It's a process. I'm not locked in yet," said Young, 25. "If definitely gives me something to work on in the offseason, so next year I can start off where I left off this year instead of starting off slowly and playing catch-up the second half."

CARDINALS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2: The D-backs committed two errors that led to two unearned runs as they lost their second consecutive game to maintain only the slimmest possible chance to make the playoffs. Arizona trails Los Angeles by four games in the NL West with four games remaining and must win out while the Dodgers lose out to force a one-game playoff in Los Angeles on Monday.

RHP Max Scherzer committed a throwing error on a bunt that led to two St. Louis runs in the second inning, and 3B Mark Reynolds' error led to an unearned run in the fourth. Reynolds leads the major leagues with 34 errors. SS Stephen Drew and OF Conor Jackson had three hits apiece.
